What to Expect During a Session

After completing an initial intake, I invite my client to set an intention for the session.  This creates structure for the work and invites you to become a part of your own healing process.  Our time together is to invite curiosity and see what your body is it's trying to tell you.

Clients remain fully clothed and lay comfortably on a foam-padded massage table.   Pillows, table warmers and blankets make sure your body feels supported and at the right temperature.   Before I begin treatment I evaluate where you may be holding any strain patterns and/or in your body using refined palpation skills.

Restrictions occur most commonly in fascia but can also reside deeper within the body- such as within the dura mater (fascia lining the brain and spinal cord) and the sutures between cranial bones.  If for example you come in for treatment of a concussion, I might find a restriction at the sight of impact where you hit your head as well as somewhere else within your system.  Bodies like to compensate in other areas so as to attempt to stay in balance.  Together we will connect the dots.

What we discover may surprise you.  Sometimes a client says they want help with a physical problem and the session reveals an emotional component that's been holding back their healing.  Other times there may be a physical problem that is causing an emotional problem, such as some cases of postpartum depression.  Staying curious and open to discovery often increases the therapeutic outcome of a session.

Craniosacral therapy is gentle and only uses about 5 grams of pressure.  For my adult clients however, sometimes other techniques may be called for to address a physical issue.   This could include manual lymphatic drainage, trigger point therapy or myofascial release.  Every session is unique to the individual!

If appropriate and authentic to your process I may facilitate a dialogue between you and your body by asking you simple, open-ended questions. There is never a right or wrong answer- most important is the process of creating this connection.  Every person's sensory awareness is unique and I help you learn to communicate from an embodied place rather than the thinking rational mind.

Because we are working directly with your nervous system clients often experience a state of deep relaxation.  Many people often describe a peaceful "floating" sensation after completing a session.  We have helped to regulate your nervous system, released restrictions and improved fluid production/ flow so your body may need a few moments to sit and integrate the experience.

For some people one session might be sufficient in addressing whatever it is your intention to address.  I often recommend a series of three sessions however, as there are often many layers to our healing.

Those experiencing chronic conditions might benefit from weekly sessions for 1-2 months and then transition to monthly appointments based on their needs.
